Fire Restrictions

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions In Effect

  • City of Steamboat Springs starting 1:00AM on August 20, 2020
  • Routt County, Colorado, starting 12:01AM on August 20, 2020
  • Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions:

The following acts are prohibited with in the corporate limits of the City of Steamboat Springs

  1.  All open fires and campfires, including permitted recreational fires, are prohibited except petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, and heating devices that are underwriter approved.
  2. Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles and buildings.
  3. All chainsaws and other internal combustion engines, including motorcycles and ATVs, must have spark-arresting devices that are properly installed and in working order.
  4. Use of explosives is prohibited.
  5. Outdoor use of welding and cutting torch devices are prohibited.
  6. Use of tracer rounds or incendiary targets are prohibited for all shooting activities in the county.
  7. Individual agencies (such as fire protection districts, or state or federal organizations) may further restrict commercial activities not included in this Declaration such as construction, logging, or oil and gas operations.


  1.  Persons with a valid written permit which specifically authorizes one of the prohibited acts from the Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Chief.  
  2. Any federal, state or local officer or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an actual duty.

NOTE: Any permit issued by the Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Chief prior to this Declaration is rescinded until these restrictions are lifted by the city.

Yampa River 

Primarily due to low river flows along with a concern about high water temperatures and low oxygen levels in the Yampa River, the city is implementing closures for all commercial activities on the Yampa River and asking the public to abide by a voluntary closure for all recreational river use.
