STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 15, 2020-A pilot project will launch a new way to compost organic waste for residential and business customers through a unique partnership between Innovative Regeneration Colorado (IRC) and the City of Steamboat Springs.
“Approximately 40% of the food produced in the United States goes to waste,” commented Mark Berkley with Innovative Regeneration Colorado. “Our goal with this program is to take local food waste and regenerate it into a usable product, in this instance compost, that keeps the regenerative cycle going.”
Program participants will drop-off organic waste in buckets provided by the program every week at the Rodeo Grounds. The drive-through collection site will take the buckets, weigh them, dump the organic waste into IRC’s containers and then return the bucket to customers so that the next week’s material can be collected.
Staffed by IRC’s Feed for Seed personnel, the mobile collection will be available every Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm, starting July 15. So far, approximately twenty participants have enrolled in the pilot program which spans residents and businesses.
In Routt County, there are currently only limited programs on a small scale relating to food waste, with nearly 100% of all uneaten foods going to the landfill. A small portion of the residents compost independently, which helps, but much more composting is needed to realize substantial positive effects on the overall community, such as greenhouse emissions reductions.
“We hope this initial step will change that for our community,” said the city’s Interim Facilities Manager Brian Ashley. “Ultimately, additional individuals and businesses will see the benefits of the program and realize the advantages of an option that hasn’t been widely available in the community.”
