In 2005 and 2006 City Council approved expenditure of $15,000 city funds and $10,000 matching funds for the purchase of public art capital projects.

In 2007, the City received a gift of artwork by a local group - The Artists for Public Art. The group had commissioned a sculpture by local artist Christopher Oar, whose artwork has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. The sculpture was installed in June, 2007 at the City's Howelsen Ice Arena on Howelsen Place. See a photo of the artwork "Red Fern" on this page.

The Public Art Board then used a public process to search for artists and select a piece of art for Little Toots Park. The artwork that was selected and created is "Bench People" by artist Madeline Weiner. See photos on this page.

Public Art Board

In 2006, City Council established the Steamboat Springs Public Art Board to develop a plan and process for allocation of the City's capital projects funds. The Mission of the Public Art Board of the City of Steamboat Springs at this time was to advise City Council on the expenditure of capital project funds; develop a plan and public process for allocation of those funds including advice on selection, location, acquisition, ownership, maintenance, education and creating public awareness of Public Art for the City and community of Steamboat Springs.

In 2009, due to lack of funding for public art, the Steamboat Springs Public Art Board became an ad-hoc committee which now meets as needed to advise City Council and advance public art in the community.
