At the end of 2001, the department made the transistion from all volunteer to a combination department with some full-time firefighters and paramedics along with the addition of some part-time staff. Volunteers are still a vital part of the organization.

The fire department is always in need of firefighters and EMS providers. The yearly Recruit Program has been set up to train new members.

After submitting a written application, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be twenty-one (21) years of age.
  2. Be a U.S citizen
  3. Must possess and keep a valid Colorado driver’s license.

If applicant meets the stated criteria, staff and recruit advisors will interview the applicant. The applicant must pass the department ability test prior to starting recruit training. Download a copy of the Recruit Program Guidelines and class schedule to see what is involved.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue welcomes new applicants and maintains an open list of new recruits. Currently we are not hiring additional full-time staff.
