Summer Camps

PICT0004.JPG

The Recreation Department offers a fun and exciting assortment of youth camps. Three full-time camps (Incredible Steamboat Sneakers, Steamboat Explorers Club and Rocky Mountain Adventure Club) and two part-time camps (Mini Sprouts and Counselors in Training) for summer fun. The activities of each camp are designed to challenge the level of each age group. On trip days, staff targets skills for the safe enjoyment of outdoor adventures in the Rocky Mountains. Our 2008 summer camp season begins June 9th and ends August 21st. The Adventure Bound in Steamboat Springs programs have an inclusion program that addresses children with special needs in the least restrictive environment. Parents of such children are asked to call in advance to indicate your child's specific needs and set up suitable programming.

Registration for Summer camp 2008 for grades 1st-6th is now underway! Registration packets are available at the Parks, Open Space & Recreation Office, 245 Howelsen Parkway.

Dear RMAC Parents,

Some important notes for everyone...

First and foremost , our last campout to Fort Collins was wonderful. The 20 minutes of bad weather was certainly interesting and added an educational component to the trip, but the group as a whole did a great job of making the best of it. Kudos to all!

Some parents have voiced concerns about bullying during camp. We have had some mini camps around the topic for the kids and with your involvement as parents the situation seems to be taking a good turn. This is a difficult age for some kids and we will continue as a staff to watch for signs and do our best to keep bullying out of our program. If your child reports inappropriate actions, please report them to us ASAP. Thank you for your support and communication through all this.

Sunscreen & water bottles are two of the MOST important items for your child to bring to camp EVERY day.

We are doing our best to prevent sunburns by having organized application times at 10:00, noon and 2:00 every day. You can help us keep the daily cost of camp down by sending your child with sunscreen every day (please put your child's name on it). We will supply a backup if your child forgets, but please do not depend on our supply.

Water bottles are easily lost or misplaced and it can be frustrating to keep replacing them. Don't feel it is necessary to send a fancy biking bottle or anything, a recycled plastic bottle that has a tight fitting cap is all that is necessary. Good hydration keeps the kids happier and healthy. Write your child's name (or family's last name) on the bottle and that will help bottles find their way back to owners. Please help us out, we want your kids to be safe and have fun!

Please take a second look at the campout supplies list in the calendar packet for each and every campout. When it comes to setting up tents it is always a good idea to educate your child as to your particular tent is set up. Many families have found it helpful to set up your child’s tent with them in the yard so that they feel comfortable with the process and can help staff figure it out as well. In addition it can help some kids who are nervous about camping feel more comfortable and confident to be familiar with their own equipment. This also helps with equipment coming back with all of its parts.

Unfortunately for unforeseen circumstances, the Fulford Caving campout had to be changed. Our new destination will be Grand Junction where the group will be staying at the James M. Robb State Park. The camp will be hiking in the Colorado State Monument Park and going swimming at the Lincoln Park pool. Kids are allowed to bring a skateboard and helmet and if weather and time permit, the group will visit one of the two skate parks in town. If your child chooses not to go, you can receive a household credit for the campout by calling Tori @ 879-4300 by 5:00 pm Friday, July 25th. Thank you for your cooperation and we are truly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

If you have any other concerns or questions in reference to camp or your child please feel free to speak with us personally.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Travis, Youth Program Coordinator
