Child Identification System Program

The importance of child abduction prevention and child identification is self evident. There are over 800,000 children reported missing in the United States each year. The Steamboat Springs Public Safety Department is dedicated to preventing the loss of a child by providing the proper identification system. We offer free identification kits purchased through the department and donated products from local businesses. The kits are designed to assist law enforcement agencies in locating children that are lost or abducted. We offer the kits all year long at the Police Department and at local special events. We encourage parents to update their kits every 6 months with a new picture and description of the child. Two basic kits are offered: one that has a comprehensive list of the child's information that is stored at home, luggage (on trips) or in a safety deposit box; and a second that has abbreviated information with a current picture that is carried in a purse or wallet for use when traveling with a child. The first minutes count the most when a child is missing, so being prepared with these kits can make the difference. We offer this program in conjunction with the ongoing Injury Prevention Programs available through the Police and Fire Department that includes "Stranger Danger" messages and teaching.
