The City of Steamboat Springs has reopened the Spring Creek Trail and Spring Creek
Park for public access. This trail was closed in January 2010 to all public access due to
hazard tree removal and fire break operations. This work was funded by a High Priority
Forest Fuels Mitigation grant that was awarded by the Colorado State Forest Service and
was directed at restoring forest health by removing dead and diseased trees.
However, a seasonal wildlife closure is still in effect for a majority of the Spring Creek Trail. The closure begins approximately 1.5 miles up the trail from Amethyst Drive, where the
two track road changes to single track trail, and extends to the top of the trail at the Dry
Lake Parking Lot. Access to the closed section of trail is blocked with a gate and a sign is
posted with the dates and information about this closure. The seasonal wildlife closure is
from November 15 though April 15 each year.
The annual seasonal closure is done in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Wildlife
to provide winter habitat for the local elk herd. Illegal trespass into the closed area can put
additional stress on the animals in the hard winter months. Please respect this seasonal
trail closure and enjoy other trails that do not impact wildlife. For more information on
wildlife closures, contact Jim Haskins at the Colorado Division of Wildlife at 871-2842.
