Safety Education

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) is involved with educating the public in many different forms, from children to adults. Education varies from general fire safety topics for children, station tours, installation of car seats, use of smoke and Co detectors, and preparation for emergency events. Below is some information we hope you find useful.

Station Tours

All station tours are done by members of SSFR and require a two-week advance notice. To schedule a tour, contact the fire station at 970-879-7170.

National Fire Prevention WeekFire Prevention Week Demonstration

SSFR observes Fire Prevention Week annually in October with a series of safety tips, educational outreach programs, public safety messages including the daily safety tip, and overall general safety awareness for the community.

“As we know, seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy in a fire,” said Mel Stewart, Fire Chief. “While fire prevention should be practiced every day, this week brings special attention to the topic and what we all can do to minimize potential threats.”

In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in the country. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a home fire.

Safety Seat InspectionsCarSeatsColorado-Logo-Vertical

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that half of the child car seats in use today are installed incorrectly without parents realizing it. Nationally over 1,000 children under age 10 die and 160,000 are injured each year as passengers in motor vehicles. The lives of you and your family could depend on using seat belts and child car seats correctly.

SSFR would be happy to inspect your car seat to ensure that your child is properly restrained. Complementary inspections and installations are offered, please call 970-879-7170 to set up an appointment.

If you are in need of additional information and to see the laws relating to child safety seats, check out the Colorado Child Passenger Safety site.
