SSPD, Local Agencies, and Non-Profits Celebrate Teen Safety Week
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 5, 2023-Teens are an important part of our community and keeping them safe is a top priority. In addition to ongoing outreach efforts, the Steamboat Springs Police Department (SSPD) has developed a teen support program ‘In The Same ‘Boat’, an inter-agency collaboration to promote and cultivate community support and encourage teen safety in the Yampa Valley.
“The goal of this program is to support teens by bringing awareness to the social challenges they face and connecting them and their parents with valuable tools and resources available within the community” stated Patty Oakland, Civilian Investigator for the Steamboat Springs Police Department. “Most importantly, we want teens to know that our community cares about them and the choices they make”.
As part of the new initiative, the SSPD, in partnership with local agencies and non-profit organizations, will be hosting a Teen Safety Week from May 8 – May 13. Teen Safety Week will include various outreach and education initiatives at local schools, online, and within the community. Each weekday will highlight a different safety theme and offer information and tips for teens and their parents.
- Monday (5/8) – Driving Impaired
- Tuesday (5/9) – Driving Distracted
- Wednesday (5/10) – Substance Misuse and Abuse
- Thursday (5/11) – Mental Health and Sense of Belonging
- Friday (5/12) – Teen Dating Violence, Sexual Pressures, and Sexual Assault
- Saturday (5/13) – SSHS Prom and After Prom
In addition, the SSPD and Steamboat Radio, will host a Teen Safety Fair on Thursday, May 11 from 4 PM to 6 PM at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. Teens, parents, and community members are invited to attend to learn more about the resources available in our area. Program partners, local agencies, and non-profit organizations will host tables and be on hand to share valuable information and resources in a casual meet-and-greet atmosphere.
Members from Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue will also be on hand to demonstrate life-like extraction scenarios on a mock car crash to highlight the dangers of driving distracted or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Attendees will be able to grab a delicious woodfire pizza from the Clyde’s Pies mobile pizza oven while they socialize and check out everything the fair has to offer.
