STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 17, 2023-The Steamboat Springs Police Department has named Krista Amatuzio as the new Community Service Supervisor responsible for leading the department’s community service efforts.
“We’re fortunate to have someone with Krista’s expertise, experience, and dedication internally who can move into a key leadership position,” said Commander Rich Brown. “Krista always has the community’s best interests at heart and has proven that time and time again as an ACO. As supervisor, she will focus that same energy into ensuring the division is best positioned to serve the needs of our community – both people and pets.”
In her new role, Amatuzio will oversee Community Service which handles non-criminal calls and when fully staffed consists of eight full-time officers (six Community Service Officers and two Animal Control Officers) that handle parking, code enforcement and animal calls year-round. In addition, Community Service is called to assist with traffic control at accident scenes, special events and other functions.
With the city for the past 12 years, Amatuzio originally started as a Police Officer Recruit, before moving into the role of Animal Shelter Care Technician, and then Animal Control Officer, where she has served since 2015.
A state and nationally certified Animal Control Officer and National Cruelty Investigator, she has more than 450 hours of Animal Welfare Training in the past decade. Since 2016, Amatuzio has served as the area representative on the state board, The Animal Welfare Association of Colorado, which focuses on issues that affect animals and communities across Colorado.
Her efforts have been recognized with the Chief’s Compassion Award for helping a citizen experiencing a mental health crisis and the Chief’s Commendation Award for her work on a difficult and severe cruelty case regarding a German Shepherd.
The community has also benefited from her expertise as a volunteer with the Animal Assistance League of Northwest Colorado, assisting with spay/neuter programs, public animal medical needs and public education in five western Colorado counties. As the city’s representative in the Chamber’s 2023 Leadership Class, Amatuzio is working on fundraising efforts for a local LGBTQIA2S+ resource center.
Amatuzio will report to Commander Brown and assume her new duties starting May 21.
