Steamboat Springs, Colorado-May 6, 2026-The Steamboat Springs Police Department (SSPD) is honoring the community’s deep ranching roots and Western heritage through a new partnership with F.M. Light & Sons to introduce a summer uniform that reflects the authentic character of the Yampa Valley.
“This partnership is about more than a uniform—it’s about connection to place and tradition,” said Police Chief Mark Beckett. “Steamboat Springs has a proud ranching history and a culture grounded in hard work, independence, and community. Our officers are part of that story, and this uniform reflects the values and heritage that continue to shape who we are today.”
Beginning this summer, officers will have the option of transitioning to a uniform that includes jeans, boots, and cowboy hats—each sourced from the locally owned outfitter that has served generations of ranchers, residents, and visitors for more than a century.
The updated look maintains the professionalism expected of law enforcement while embracing the Western authenticity that defines Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley.
The Western heritage uniform may be worn from May 1 through October 1 and at community-focused events, where approachability and connection are central to the department’s mission. While the appearance may shift with the seasons, SSPD’s commitment to public safety, service, and professionalism remains constant.
“This is a natural fit and reflects a community where Western heritage isn’t just history—it’s a living part of everyday life,” continued Chief Beckett. “Partnering with a long-standing local business like FM Light is a meaningful way to honor that legacy while serving today’s community.”
Founded in 1905, F.M. Light & Sons has been a cornerstone of downtown Steamboat Springs, outfitting generations with Western wear. Still family-owned and operated by the fifth generation, the business remains a symbol of the Yampa Valley’s enduring connection to its ranching culture and Western identity.
