STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 21, 2024-Shortly after 9am this morning, Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) and Steamboat Springs Police Department (SSPD) were dispatched to Sleepy Bear Mobile Home Park for a structure fire to one of the units in the complex.
SSFR dispatched an engine, ambulance, ladder truck, and two water tankers to the scene. West Routt Fire Department also sent an engine and water tanker and crew to assist.
Lieutenant DeRisio had the crew set up two portable water tanks for the engine to draw water from and deployed several hose crews. Firefighters established a perimeter to protect adjacent structures and attacked the structure fire. The fire was knocked down fairly quickly and crews worked on any remaining hot spots inside the structure. The fire and damage were mostly contained to the single structure with light damage to the exterior of an adjacent structure.
One individual from the home was transported to UC Health-Yampa Valley Medical Center for further evaluation and smoke inhalation. This same individual was charged by the SSPD on suspicion of CRS 18-4-105 (1) Fourth Degree Arson-Class 3 Felony. SSPD detectives, the SSFR Fire Marshal, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are actively working the scene as an ongoing investigation.
Electricity was shut off to most of the Sleepy Bear neighborhood during the incident and Yampa Valley Electric Association restored power roughly two hours after the initial call.
All persons accused of crimes are presumed innocent until and unless their guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
