STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-November 1, 2024-The city has published the preliminary September 2024 sales, use, accommodation, and STR tax report. The September 2024 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 5.51% lower compared to the September 2023 collections or a decrease of $183,635. Year-to-date sales tax collection is 1.39% more than year to date through the same period last year. For the past 5 years, September collections represent about 8.71% of annual collections.

When comparing this September to the same month last year the notable changes in collections by category are in liquor stores at -11.96%, marijuana at -14.59%, and sporting goods at -15.94%, over last September. Changes were seen in most geographical areas, notably Out of Town and Mountain areas.

Accommodation Tax is dedicated to maintenance of improvements and amenities that enhance the community identity, environmental sustainability, and economic health of Steamboat Springs; acquisition of real property for parks, recreation, and open space purposes; and preservation of the city’s natural resources. September collections are 6.11% lower compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date accommodation tax collection is 5.94% more than in the same period last year.

Short-Term Rental tax (STR tax) is dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate the development of affordable and attainable housing at locations including, but not limited to, Brown Ranch and to provide funding for infrastructure associated with affordable and attainable housing, including without limitation, energy, stormwater, water, wastewater, and multi-modal transportation.

September STR tax collection is 8.66% lower compared to September 2023 or a decrease of $62,026. Year-to-date short term rental tax collections is 96.70% more than year-to-date through the same period last year. This increase is related to the exemption during fiscal year 2023. In fiscal year 2023, reservations booked on or prior to December 31, 2022, for stays occurring between January 1, 2023, and September 15, 2023, were not subject to STR tax.

Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax reconciliations completed, and the size and number of developments in the city. September use tax collection is 23.96% higher compared to September 2023 or an increase of $69,912. September net use tax collections total $361,744.
