Recycling

Bin 2In July of 2021, the City of Steamboat Springs adopted Routt County Climate Action Plan, which identified an ambitious waste reduction target that the County and its partners can pursue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote the development of a circular economy within the community. Target: Increase diversion of waste to landfill to 46 percent by 2030 and 85 percent by 2050. Check Progress Toward Goals

Solid Waste Code

In working towards waste diversion goals laid out in the Climate Action Plan, Chapter 19 of the Steamboat Springs Revised Municipal Code (Solid Waste) requires collectors providing curbside services to provide recycling services to both residential and commercial customers. The Municipal Code reporting requirements state that collectors of solid waste be licensed by the City and report tonnage and customer data on a quarterly basis. Additionally, all attractant solid waste materials must be contained in a wildlife-resistant container, dumpster or enclosure.

The recycling mandate for commercial waste customers, required compliance by July 31, 2024, with fines beginning in March 2025 and states that recycling capacity shall be equal to at least 50 percent of trash service capacity when container size, number and collection frequency are considered.
