Counselor-In-Training
Overview
The City of Steamboat Springs Parks & Recreation Department is excited to offer a Summer Camp Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program for teens entering grades 6th-8th. The intent behind this program is to provide participants the opportunity to gain experience in the childcare field, and to develop a positive work ethic. This program will also teach participants aspects of working as a team, and the process of applying/interviewing for a job. The experience they receive will hopefully help them as they enter the working world and become mature young adults.
Responsibilities
- Participating in summer programs in a "helper" role for the younger camps.
- Helping adult staff in keeping younger children happy, busy, occupied, and well-behaved.
- Asking to help and helping when asked - avoid being idle.
- Facilitating activities with the help of adult staff.
- Serving as a role model for younger campers.
- Helping set up and clean up activities.
- Preparing art projects for the following day.
- Performing other jobs as needed and appropriate.
Expectations
As a CIT, you are expected to demonstrate professionalism, responsibility, and leadership. The following expectations must be followed:
- Be a good role model for younger campers and staff.
- Take initiative and offer help when needed.
- Be a quality worker by putting effort into all tasks and responsibilities.
- Work as a team member, cooperating with other CITs and adult staff.
- Work in a professional manner - No cell phones or other devices during camp hours.
- Wear your uniform shirt each day.
- Be respectful of Summer Camp goals, structure, and programs.
- Help solve conflict using methods learned in CIT orientation.
- Do not abuse your position as an authority figure; treat all campers and staff with respect.
Requirements
To apply for the CIT program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Previous Enrollment: Candidates must have been previously enrolled in the City of Steamboat Springs Summer Camp and/or Afterschool Program for at least one year.
- Grade Level: Candidates must be entering 6th - 8th grades for the 2026-2027 school year.

- Application Due Date: May 1, 2026
- Notification Of Selection: May 8, 2026
Registration
- Selected CIT's will be required to register for the Summer Camp days that they want to work.
- Registration will be available May 11 to May 15
- CIT's will be limited to a maximum of 2 days/week.
- Program registration will be on a "Day of Week" schedule, meaning all Monday's, or all Tuesday's, etc.
- Each session will cost $50. This fee helps cover activity costs, snacks, and uniforms.
